With today’s Fruit Grower Report, I’m Bob Larson. So, Phase One of a trade deal with China could be signed very soon!

Word is, Chinese delegates will be in Washington D.C. next Wednesday for a signing ceremony to make it official.

U.S. Representative Dan Newhouse says he’s feeling pretty good about this potential deal …

NEWHOUSE … “I gotta tell you, that there is a lot of optimism about taking this first step. It could be huge for agriculture.”

Newhouse says it will be a good thing for America, but for those closer to home in particular …

NEWHOUSE … “There’s a lot of good things here that could really help the Pacific Northwest and the state of Washington. So, I’m excited about our two countries coming together and demonstrating that we can, even though these issues are tough and complicated, that we can make progress and I’m excited for not only this first phase, but what that will allow us to continue working on to get further down this road of having a completed trade deal with China.”

But, Newhouse says the pressures don’t just go away after the deal is signed …

NEWHOUSE … “One of the issues that could come from this is if we have the potential for exporting a lot of agricultural products to China, we’re going to have to step up our production, which is a good thing. And so, I’m excited about the opportunity that could be in store for American agriculture.”

Tune in tomorrow for the latest on the trade picture and what else could be happening next week.
