HUT Principle

I’m KayDee Gilkey with today’s Northwest Farm and Ranch Report.

This time of year there are many conferences, workshops and seminars for farmers and ranchers to attend. Many provide interesting and educational speakers. How much of what you hear or learn at a seminar do you as a producer take home and DO something differently because of what you learned?Well, Globetrotting Emeritus ag econ professor from Virginia Tech Dr. Dave Kohl shares his HUT principle for ag producers who are participating in educational seminars or workshops.
Kohl: “Well, one of the things is that we have the Super Bowl and often times the quarter back goes, ‘HUT’. What is HUT as it pertains to agriculture? A number of people will hear, fewer people understand but then fewer people take action.”
What did you hear or understand at a recent seminar? Did you take any action based on what you learned?
Dr Kohl shares that it is that taking action that is often the most difficult but most important step in your ag business.
Kohl: “Why people do not take action -- there is consequences. Of course there are consequences if you don’t take action. A number of people are afraid to make a mistake so they become what -- complacent and conservative. And of the things that I will tell agricultural groups is, ‘You are going to make mistakes. Just don’t make the same mistake twice.”
Consider using the HUT principle at your next educational seminar or conference. Jot down actionable steps that you could take in your operation based on what you learned. Then go home and accomplish those actions.
