With today's Fruit Grower Report, I'm Bob Larson. After President Trump pulled us out of the North American Free Trade Agreement, or NAFTA, with Mexico and Canada, American growers, including those right here in the Pacific Northwest have been waiting on a replacement.

U.S. Representative Dan Newhouse says we are in the final stages ...

NEWHOUSE ... "Without having the tacit agreement from the Speaker that it will be positively considered that risks losing the agreement and so I think there's a strategy being worked out between the White House and the Congress in order to make sure that this is a successful process."

Newhouse says there's a lot being done behind the scenes ...

NEWHOUSE ... "I do know that Ambassador Lighthizer has been in close touch with the Speaker's office and other members of Congress. The President certainly is urging us to get this approved as well as, I tell everyone that comes to meet me in my office to please encourage other members of the Washington delegation to urge Speaker Pelosi to bring this forward so that we can get this necessary agreement passed just as Mexico and it looks like Canada is doing as well."

Newhouse feels confident ...

NEWHOUSE ... "We'll continue to work with the Administration to make sure that they understand how important it is that that agreement also, to our producers in Central Washington is very important."

Newhouse says talks with China have also resumed so he's optimistic both agreements can be done in the very near future.
