I'm Bob Larson. "Farm country has waited a long time, and today Congress delivered!" Those were the words from Central Washington Representative Dan Newhouse last week after the House voted 369-47 to pass the 2018 Farm Bill ...

NEWHOUSE ... "Proud to say that we were able to pass the Farm Bill which will give farmers and ranchers and the agricultural industry certainty over the next five years. A lot of good things in there for farmers in the state of Washington, but also some, not maybe as much as tried we had tried, but some reforms to the SNAP program to make that as efficient as possible and actually do a better job at reaching the people that need food assistance."

Newhouse says highlights of the bill include crop insurance expansion, protections for dairy, and faster environmental reviews for our forests ...

NEWHOUSE ... "We're also looking at lots of different avenues of increasing funding for opportunities for research in agriculture, which is critical for agriculture to stay on the cutting edge when it comes to our competitive nature."

And, Newhouse says there's plenty of things to help Northwest growers ...

NEWHOUSE ... "Also, we were able to be successful at keeping a good amount of funding for developing markets for agricultural products produced in the state of Washington so I'm particularly delighted by that."

Newhouse says the Farm Bill plays an enormously important role in Washington's ag economy by delivering a secure safety net for farmers and providing research that keeps us on the cutting edge.
