11/11/05 FB to kick property initiative

Washington Ag November 11, 2005 The Washington Farm Bureau will kick off a property-rights initiative drive at its 86th annual meeting next week at the Yakima Convention Center. Dan Wood, director of Government Relations for the Washington Farm Bureau, says recent court decisions and regulatory efforts make it necessary for voters to protect their property rights through the initiative process. He says the thrust of the initiative, which will be unveiled at the annual meeting, is that "whenever government actions damage the use and value of property, government must compensate for the damage or not apply the action to the property. The Farm Bureau plans to file the initiative in January and will need to collect about 225-thousand signatures to place it on the general election ballot next fall. A reminder that just ahead of the start of the Farm Bureau Convention, the organization is sponsoring a free and public forum on Roundup Ready alfalfa. Gary Joiner, director of Member Relations for the Farm Bureau, says that's from 3-5 p.m. Monday November 14th at the Yakima Convention Center. Joiner: "And we hope over that good information and accurate information will be put out on the table and everyone will have the opportunity to ask questions and learn from those involved in the issue of Roundup Ready alfalfa exactly what is going on and what the future is for the technology in Washington." I'm Bob Hoff.
