I'm Bob Larson. Media members from across the state recently got a one-day farm to market tutorial held by the Washington Association of Wheat Growers. They spoke with farmers, learned about wheat grading and testing, and the export market where Northwest growers are known for their quality ...

MARCI GREEN ... "The wheat that we export which, you know, Washington exports 90% of our wheat, and we would have a hard time if we had to just compete on price. We're in a global marketplace and with the way the dollar matches up against other currencies, our wheat tends to be a little more expensive, but where we do compete and compete very well is in quality."

I asked Vice President Marci Green where credit for our high-quality wheat lays, our climate or our hard-working farmers ...

MARCI GREEN ... "Part of it is we're lucky with the growing conditions we have in this area, but we also work hard at it. And, our researchers, particularly at WSU, they consider quality when they're breeding programs. And, when they develop new varieties, they test it for quality. And, our commission does a lot of work to promote those high-quality varieties."

Green says the intent of the tour was just to give the media a better understanding of what it is we do and that we are making every effort to take care of the land and provide a high-quality product. She also hopes it opened some eyes to the regulatory, economic, and weather-related matters they deal with year after year.
