09/09/05 Swine AI workshop

Washington Ag September 9, 2005 Washington State University Extension, the WSU Swine Center, and the Washington Pork Producers are offering a one-day, intensive hands-on workshop on the various aspects of swine artificial insemination. Sara Smith, WSU Area Extension Educator in Ephrata, says the workshop will be at the WSU Swine Center in Pullman September 24th from 8:15 am until 5:30 pm. Enrollment is limited to 15 and is expected to fill up this next week. Smith: "But it is definitely a hands-on class. People will get to artificially inseminate sows. They are going to learn by doing. We are also going to cover all aspects of swine A.I. and reproduction. And try to feature it for all segments of the industry so it is not just for the commercial. It will also have some topics for people who only have one or two sows or who might be doing show sows for the 4-H and FFA pigs." Smith says compared to cattle, swine A.I. is very easy. Smith: "One workshop will make these guys close to experts and they should be able to go home and successfully inseminate their own animals."
