07/25/05 New Dean sees funding as challenge

Washington Ag July 25, 2005 Learning the issues and needs of producers around the state and understanding how Washington State University's programs address them is the first challenge Dan Bernardo says he faces. Bernardo is the man who in August will be on the job as the Dean of WSU's College of Agricultural, Human and Natural Resource Sciences. The incoming dean was able to attend WSU's Spillman Field Day earlier this month where in an interview he said the other challenge that comes to everyone's mind is funding. Bernardo: "In the college here we are going to have to address priorities. We are going to have to spend some time prioritizing what we are going do best. We cannot be all things to all people. We have to have base programs to address the needs of all the various constituencies of the state but we simply have to drill down in some areas where we have our greatest comparative advantage." Bernardo said the economic impact of the research and extension activities will be important in determining where resources are allocated. He said partnerships with commodity groups will also be important. Bernardo, who comes to WSU from Kansas State University, says he will officially be on the job August 1st. I'm Bob Hoff.
