05/31/05 Support for cattle feeders and processors

Washington Ag May 31, 2005 Cow-calf producers may be enjoying excellent prices but there are problems in the cattle feeding and processing sectors. Washington Cattlemen's Association executive vice president Jack Field says that after some WCA members attended a forum sponsored by the Washington Cattle Feeders Association, which focused on the impact of the closure of the U.S. border to live Canadian cattle, the Cattlemen's Board of Directors decided to issue a statement of support for the feeding and processing sectors. Field: "And let them know that we would like to see them remain viable and in place in Washington state because we feel that with our conditions that we have here that we are quite fortunate with an excellent production scenario throughout the state from the west side of the Cascades all the way over to the east, and the large feeding sector we have through the Columbia Basin and central Washington and we are fortunate to have two harvest facilities here in-state. We would like to those remain in Washington so we can continue to flourish." Field says the statement of support does not compromise or back away from the WCA's position on re-opening the border with Canada, which includes getting export markets like Japan reopened first.
