03/04/05 Senators want border rule override

Washington Ag March 4, 2005 The U.S. Senate yesterday debated and voted on a joint resolution that disapproves of the USDA's rule to reopen the U.S. border to young Canadian live cattle. Senate audio: "The yeahs are 52. The nays are 46. The joint resolution is agreed to." Both Senators Patty Murray and Maria Cantwell voted for the resolution. Opponents of reopening the border say the Senate vote could spur action in the House. However, even if Congress were to disapprove of the Canadian border rule President Bush has promised a veto and the Senate vote was not sufficient to override that. The Senate's action came a day after a federal judge in Montana issued a preliminary injunction preventing USDA's rule from taking effect Monday, March 7th. A USDA spokesman said Thursday the department will appeal that decision. The U.S. has been closed to all Canadian live cattle since BSE was discovered in Alberta in May of 2003. The Bureau of Land Management is holding a Wild Horse Adoption event in Pasco this weekend at the Franklin County TRAC. About fifty horses from eastern Oregon will be available. You can view and register to adopt all day Saturday and competitive bidding will start at 9:30 a.m. this Sunday. The minimum bid is $125 dollars. I'm Bob Hoff.
