Ducks Unlimited Agronomist Steven Dvorak, the primary developer of a tool that assigns relative ratings from 0-4 for each characteristic for each variety found in a winter wheat database. He asked his own question. If you are wondering what in the world Ducks Unlimited is doing with a crop specialist, there's an easy answer. I asked Steven how ducks were faring in our world. "At this point they are thriving quite well. Whenever you have lots of water on the landscape which we have had this year and have had for some time, you are going to draw in nesting pairs that want to grow a family in that environment. As long as we have adequate nesting habitat we have been able to put together a pretty good flock of birds. There are growing concerns about continued loss of grass on the landscape that is the traditional nesting habitat due to the conversion to cropland. That's why we have focused on promoting winter wheat. To flush that out a little bit more, we realize that the vast majority of ducks that are produced are hatched and reared on private land. Our farmer friends are truly our best friends because they are the ones that actually deliver on what our goals are. That is to make sure that the skies are filled with ducks in the fall and the spring when the migration is on. This is just one way for us to give back to a group that we very much respect and appreciate."
