Agribusiness Update for Monday 09/23/13

This is the Agribusiness Update...I'm Greg Martin...

Ag Secretary Tom Vilsack said the House vote on the Nutrition Reform and Work Opportunity Act of 2013 was a highly partisan step that does nothing to promote a bipartisan, comprehensive farm bill. He added that the legislation stands no chance of becoming law. Vilsack says the bill would deny critical nutrition assistance for millions of Americans - including working families with children, senior citizens, veterans and adults who are still looking for work.

Now that the House has passed its nutrition bill - ag groups say it's time to get to work passing a single piece of comprehensive legislation that provides farmers the certainty they need to continue producing and making the long-term investments needed for a steady and reliable source of safe and affordable food, fiber and fuel.

The House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee has passed the Water Resources Reform and Development Act of 2013. National Corn Growers Association President Pam Johnson says a modern inland waterways system is critical to American agriculture and the nation's economy. She notes more than a billion tons of domestic commerce - valued at more than 300-billion dollars - travels through our lock and dam system each year.

That's today's Agribusiness Update from the Ag Information Network.
