Agribusiness Update for Thursday 7/4/13

A broad coalition of more than 530 agriculture, conservation, rural development, finance, forestry, energy and crop insurance companies and organizations are urging Congress to pass a comprehensive, five-year farm bill before the extension of the 2008 Farm Bill expires on September 30th. They’re asking House Speaker John Boehner to bring the bill back to the House floor for a vote as soon as possible.

A Harvard professor is challenging current recommendations from the USDA and the American Academy of Pediatrics that people of all ages drink three servings of reduced-fat milk per day. David Ludwig, PhD, professor of pediatrics at Harvard Medical School, says the low-fat dairy drink is loaded with sugar and calories. He also says there are plenty of solid foods that provide adequate amounts of calcium.

The Social Security Administration says that the immigration bill passed by the Senate would help its coffers, adding $276 billion in revenue over the next 10 years while costing only $33 billion. But 10 years is a short time when you consider that a vast majority of the new and newly legalized immigrants would be paying into the system during that period and drawing out their Social Security benefits later.

That’s today’s Agribusiness Update from the Ag Information Network.
