Agribusiness Update for Monday 6/24/13

This is the Agribusiness Update...I’m Greg Martin...

The ag industry has been reeling since the House once again failed to pass their version of the farm bill last Thursday. Industry leaders all across the board have lashed out at the House. Strangely it was not a farm issue that doomed the bill but a nutrition issue that comprises a majority of the actual bill. There is some fear in the industry that once again the House will not be able to complete their part of the bill before the September deadline.

Oregon agriculture is on guard after nearly 6500 genetically modified sugar beet plants were uprooted and destroyed last week. No one knows who is responsible and the FBI has been called in to investigate the matter. The value of the destroyed plants has not been released due to the investigation. The Oregon Department of Ag’s Katy Coba said to her knowledge, this is the first time someone has deliberately taken the cowardly step of uprooting high value plants.

The fight over the Renewable Fuels Standard continues. Renewable Fuels Association’s Bob Dinneen says the proposed legislation may serve the oil and gas interests in Wyoming - but it’s bad for consumers, bad for the environment and bad for America.

That’s today’s Agribusiness Update from the Ag Information Network.
