Homeland Security wants Congress to authorize the study of a fee that could be collected from everyone who enters this country at land crossings. The department's 2014 budget proposal seeks increases in existing fees charged for services, including fees air and sea travelers pay when they enter the country. Until now, no fees have been imposed on those who enter by car, bus or train.

The spotted wing drosophila fly, which lays its eggs in fruit and makes it unmarketable, could reach record population levels in the Pacific Northwest this year, according to Oregon State University researchers. The economic stakes are high. OSU researchers are seeing if a parasitic wasp that is native to the United States can be used to control the spotted wing drosophila.

USDA is extending for five years its agreement to work with the FAA and other partners to help develop a viable biofuel for the aviation industry. The new agreement follows the initial success of the 2010-2012 "Farm to Fly" initiative. It also supports President Obama's commitment to clean energy technology, energy independence and job creation and strengthening the rural economy.

That’s today’s Agribusiness Update from the Ag Information Network.
