Agribusiness Update for Friday 3/22/13

This is the Agribusiness Update...I’m Greg Martin...

Congress has successfully passed a Continuing Resolution to fund the government for the next six months. The House passed their version earlier this month.  After eight days of floor debate, the Senate passed an updated version on Wednesday. The Senate bill went much further than the House bill, and included appropriations for the departments of Defense, Veterans Affairs, Justice, Commerce, Agriculture and Homeland Security.

House Natural Resources Committee Chairman Doc Hastings has reintroduced Bipartisan legislation aimed at protecting endangered Columbia River salmon and other fish species from predation by sea lions. The bill would allow states and tribes to obtain permits for lethal removal of the most aggressive sea lions to help protect endangered salmon as they return to spawn.

And an Illinois farmer says lawsuits filed against several Washington State dairies should be watched. The lawsuits demonstrate the ongoing opposition by environmental groups against concentrated animal feeding operations in the U.S. and constitute a major threat against animal agriculture.

That’s today’s Agribusiness Update from the Ag Information Network.
