6-9 SS Red's Report

6-9 SS Red's Report

A recent record was broken in the Yakima River Canyon. I’m David Sparks with sportsmen’s spotlight and I’ll have that story in a minute. I got an e-mail from Red’s Fly Shop saying the famous Mother's Day Caddis Hatch exploded last week in the Yakima River Canyon. So what record was broken?  There was not a single angler on the river fishing! Make no mistake, even at 7500 cfs the trout are eating Caddis.  They are slurping mouthfuls of them in the back eddies!  As the river calms down, we may see some of the best fishing of all time in the Yakima Canyon.

Speaking of Red’s Fly Shop in Ellensburg, Washington Craig Hettinger is the shop guy there and I asked him what he thought was hot in the shop. “the latest greatest is that NRX for Loomis.  It’s not a pretty rod but man is it sweet to cast. I mostly fish Sages, I’ve got Sage 6126 speys  and switch rods and Sage single handed rods but that NRX  is sweet to cast. They spent almost 8 years coming up with a formula to make that rod. I believe I could take that four weight and a surface fly and catch steelhead on the surface and not have a problem with over fighting him because it has that much backbone. A lot of times when you take a four-weight or a five weight, you ask them for a little extra. They don’t physically break but they just can’t give it to you. This rod will give you the extra you want.
