07/04/05 Spillman Field Day; Scholarships awarded

Washington Ag July 4, 205 This Thursday is Washington State University's Spillman Agronomy Farm Field Day just south of Pullman and this year's event will mark the 50th anniversary of the Spillman farm site. Additionally the field day will celebrate the 100th anniversary of the release of the first of more than 90 wheat varieties developed and released at WSU. Winter wheat breeder Steve Jones hi-lites some of this year's activities. Jones: "We will have all the old wheat varieties from 100 years ago up to the most modern varieties. Plus we will have different plot and farm equipment from quite a long time ago to the most modern too. So there will a lot of different displays. We will have historic photographs and displays as well." Registration for the field day July 7th begins at 7:30 am with field tours at 8:15. Spillman farm is located at 1452 Johnson Road south of Pullman. The Washington State Potato Foundation recently announced it had selected 22 students to receive 2005 Washington State Potato Scholarships with a value of between one-thousand and 25-hundred dollars each. Also the Washington Apple Education Foundation recently awarded 70 scholarships to students from Washington tree fruit districts. The scholarship awards totaled about 150-thousand dollars.
