Going shopping for beef has a completely different meaning between beef consumers and beef producers. If you're a consumer, you're probably thinking about putting a great cut of beef on your table to enjoy with family. Beef shopping for producers, on the other hand, means buying not cuts, but whole animals. For example, in many parts of the country - bull sale season has begun - and the decisions made at sale time could have implications on the ranch for years down the road. Kurt Kangas is the American Angus Association's Regional Manager in Alaska, Montana and Wyoming - and he offers a few tips for selecting the next herd sire. "For the commercial cattlemen, I cannot stress it enough. Just know your cows so that you will raise better calves to go to the market. The more information you can collect on your cows, the better off you are going to be when you go to select that bull. More birth records, you should know individual cow performance and you can really help out your bull buying strategy by having more information on your base herd." Kangas says that added knowledge and data on each female gives cattle producers a more complete look at what the herd needs to reach its goals
