PETA and Ranchers

Will Coggin, managing director of PETAKillsAnimals.com, has some pretty staggering statistics regarding People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals. So I wasn't surprised about the way he answered my question about ranchers.

Last year, PETA euthanized 1,809 cats and dogs and adopted out only 44. This data comes from PETA itself. All animal shelters in Virginia have to report animal custody records to the state Department of Agriculture. Here's the most recent one for PETA: https://arr.va-vdacs.com/PublicReports/ViewReport?SysFacNo=157&Calendar_Year=2017. The totals, year by year, are available at www.PETAKillsAnimals.com.

·         As for PETA's advocacy of euthanasia, check out PETA's reasoning for mass euthanasia of stray cats in this Washington Post article: https://www.washingtonpost.com/lifestyle/magazine/is-it-more-humane-to-kill-stray-cats-or-let-them-fend-alone/2014/02/06/472f9858-82a4-11e3-9dd4-e7278db80d86_story.html?utm_term=.c52b3bcf75f7

·         PETA was caught stealing a Chihuahua off a front porch and euthanizing it: https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2017/aug/17/peta-sorry-for-taking-girls-dog-putting-it-down

·         PETA employees were caught in North Carolina picking up animals, killing them in the back of a PETA van, and dumping the corpses in a shopping mall: http://www.nbcnews.com/id/8255324/ns/health-pet_health/t/peta-employees-charged-animal-cruelty/

Ingrid Newkirk quotes:

"Pet ownership is an absolutely abysmal situation brought about by human manipulation." (Harper's, 1988)

"In the end, I think it would be lovely if we stopped this whole notion of pets altogether." (Newsday, 1988)

"...eventually companion animals would be phased out, and we would return to a more symbiotic relationship — enjoyment at a distance." (Harper's 1998)
