Spring Weather Outlook Pt 1

With today's Fruit Grower Report, I'm Bob Larson. Spring has sprung, as it were, and that means Winter, for the most part, is behind us. But, that still leaves questions of what Mother Nature might have in store for Washingtonians in the near-term.

State Climatologist Nick Bond says the snow pack and water situation looks pretty good, but looking ahead?

BOND ... "I would say after we get into April or so, the Spring is liable to be pretty typical and, then again, the Summer a little bit on the warm side. There's rarely much precipitation in Summer so that's not really that big a deal."

Bond says predicting whether or not we've seen the last of the freezing temps is kind of a crap shoot ...

BOND ... "Well, here's hopin'! I know, for the orchards and so forth, that can really play havoc. All you need is kind of some unusual weather at just the wrong time of year and suddenly there can be some trouble."

But, in the foreseeable future, Bond hedges his bets ...

BOND ... "That it be on the cool, perhaps damp side here for the next month or so, but it certainly doesn't appear like there's going to be any problems with water supply. Exactly how the weather plays out with regards to some of the pests and fungus and molds and so forth, boy, that's tough. Mother Nature holds the cards and, you know, she sometimes plays dirty."

Bond says the next couple of months, in air quotes, should be favorable for growers around the state.

Listen tomorrow for more on how the science of forecasting is helping us prepare.
