There’ll  be one less SOB if you try that! (Wild Bill Hickok) or how about “ Don’t try to stare me down old Nero! I’ve looked many a better man than you in the eye. Save your wind for your next victim.”  (Henry Star to Hanging Judge Isaac Parker) Despite it’s renegade reputation the west has spawned articulate and and more than a few “Dirty Harry” style quotes.  I often close Open Range  with Wallace Stegner’s  observation that “the West isn’t merely a place, but a place in mind.”  Today we’ll step farther back in history beginning with  Chief Joseph’s eloquent words ” I am tired. My heart is sick and sad.  From where the sun now stands I will fight no more forever.”  Buffalo Bill Cody showed early his prowess in dealing with Indians when he peered over a ledge to spot a humongous LakotaVillage. Cody who had been guiding the command  whispered to the Lieutenant in  Billy Crystal style “This is no place for us, Lieutenant. I think we have important business at the camp to attend to as soon as possible”! Wise words... Doc Holliday was full of great lines, the most famous uttered after being told Ike Clanton was hunting him on the morning of the OK Corral. “If God will let me live to get my clothes on, he shall see me.” The most romantic quote, hands down again at Tombstone after gunmen ambushed Virgil Earp and his friends placed him on a hotel bed  covered with blood  his wife Allie leaning over him, the tough lawman told her “never mind I’ve got one arm left to hug you with.”  Now that’s  how the West was won. I’m Susan Allen
