Moma's don’t let your babies grow up to be cowboys. Wrong! Number one, if your son wants to follow the cowboy way trust me,  you won't have much say in the matter and secondly our country would be a better place if more young men were raised outdoors in the company of animals and a hard days work. I’m Susan Allen back with Open Range. The West calls to each of us uniquely, causing some to climb or ski it’s mountains, others hunt it’s game, fish it’s rivers or photograph it’s vista’s. Yet in this digitally integrated era where life is held on a palm pilot my son Tommy has chosen the way of a the cowboy. He’s an accomplished horse trainer who developed his own methods and business he calls Communication Based Horsemanship and in his early twenties already has a long list of satisfied clients. In Tommys’ world blackberrys are still picked for a pie, a dutch oven is the best way to cook and a hard days work means you do what has be done, no matter the conditions, period!  It has been a fascinating to watch him morph into one who embraces his western heritage.  When did it all start?  Was it that first pair of cowboy boots, the Daisy Red Rider he could cock so fast, his paint pony Chili-Pepper or days spent hunting alone with his  horses  in High country? I’ll never know and but I do know the old saying “ A cowboy’s a man with guts and a horse” perfectly describes the man my son has become on this, his 24th Birthday. Mama’s let  your babies grow up to be cowboys; rodeo’s , ropins, round pens and roughstock...... it’s been a great ride.    I’m Susan Allen
