One thing the West does better than anywhere else in the US  is generate powder.  You know, the fluffy white stuff that attracts snow skiers and boarders in droves.  I’m Susan Allen stay tuned it’s Friday on today’s  Open Range you'll  learn where some ski bargains will be this season. My local ski area Mission Ridge announced the Olympic ski team would be training here in February. I could bump into Bode! I am doing squats and lunges in anticipation of maybe just maybe getting to take a run on the  mock Olympic down hill course being constructed.  If you crave the real deal book Whistler this winter. Oddly when resorts host the Olympics their bottom line often takes a hit as skiers tend to shy away over worries about crowds, and construction.  In anticipation of this phenomena Whistler and surrounding resorts like the Four Seasons are providing a bevy of bargains before and after the Olympics. Ski areas that cater to the hoity toity who initially  thought they were recession,  proof learned from Tamerack in Idaho and this year many are actually offering specials hoping to entice the average Joe . Aspen Skiing Company that operates Buttermilk , Snowmass, Highlands and Ajax is inviting kids to stay, ski, eat, even rent skis free all March. There’s your spring break.  If you want to give black diamonds for Christmas watch liftopia.com each day  for sales and deeply discounted tickets. This winter may your powder be pouffy and remember, when it comes to the West, it’s not merely a place but a place of mind.  I’m Susan Allen
