The Washington state Department of Agriculture has come up with a very sophisticated system called Animal Tracks which enables all kinds of trace abilities including disease amongst livestock. Here is Mike Louisell, Public Information Officer Washington State Department of Agriculture. "We are confident that Washington state's animal disease traceability ranks above average nationwide. Due to the enormous support we get from our livestock industry that provides the funding to maintain and operate our system's capability. So animal tracks has been in operation for some time now and it is important because it allows us to collect information on animal health and animal movements. It allows us to quickly store and retrieve this information. It's an effective traceability system that's part of a larger food security and safety net in our nation that provides confidence for our consumers that the meat they buy is safe and healthy. We provide information on our industry's ability to trace livestock movements at key meetings across the state and we staff booths across Washington meetings. We also have information on our website. It's one of the key aspects of operating our animal services division that includes programs on avian health, animal health, compliance with our livestock laws, theft protection and other measures to help promote the livestock industry."
