Public Land Use

Yesterday we told you that community leaders from across the Treasure Valley attending a joint Chamber of Commerce luncheon in Caldwell, listened closely to agricultural industry professionals discussing issues of concern in the dairy, cattle, wheat and energy sectors of Idaho agriculture. Cameron Mulroney, representing the Idaho Cattle Association told the group that the ongoing challenge for cattle ranchers is the management and public use of public land grazing, vital to the industry. “The beef industry is unique, as I have mentioned before, because of open space, the state of Idaho is 60% public lands, there are challenges that are presented every day with that and producing cattle on this public land is part of the multiple use vision but there are a lot of animal issues, wildlife issues that affect the beef industry and they usually begin on public land and we are hoping for some ease from that. A lot of times in our industry we have litigation that comes down on every decision made on those public lands.” There is not much question about that. For years we have covered a certain group from Sun Valley whose lawyers never stop getting in the way of public grazing.
