06/20/05 Water users, cattle association meetings

A new degree of urgency exists today as the Idaho Water Users Association holds its annual seminar in Sun Valley. Sure to be discussed right off the bat is the ruling by a federal judge that puts Snake River dam removal back on the table as part of the salmon recovery effort. The decision sent a shock wave through Idaho water circles and prompted a call by the state's congressional delegation for the government to appeal the ruling. There are plenty of other water concerns to be discussed. On Tuesday the seminar turns its focus to the ongoing battle between canal companies and ground water pumpers. The Idaho Cattle Association holds its summer meeting at Cascade this week mixing some family fun with some important industry issues. Certain to be discussed are country of origin labeling, animal identification, trade issues and the recent announcement of new tests on a cow declared free of BSE seven months ago. Thursday's agenda includes a range tour, stops at Valley County ranches and a tour of the Tamarack Resort, which will certainly lead to talks about the conflicting demands for recreation, development and ranching. And on June 29th its a University of Idaho field day at the Parker Farm near Moscow where researchers will focus on no-till crop management to wild oat and Italian ryegrass control in wheat and barley. Its free and open to all. Voice of Idaho Agriculture Bill Scott
