12/08/05 National Pear Month

12/08/05 National Pear Month

The Pear industry is celebrating this month. Why? Under U.S.D.A. proclamation, December is National Pear Month. MOFFITT: It's not that difficult. We actually get a declaration signed by the Secretary of Agriculture declaring National Pear Month and then we go out to the press and we will continue to build this program to get consumers thinking about pears this time of the year, when all of the varieties are available. It's a peak consumption period, they are great for gift baskets and it's just a natural month for it. In fact, Pear Bureau Northwest's Kevin Moffitt adds that December is the highest volume month for consumption of pears. With that comes a variety of campaigns designed to create awareness of pears to consumers. MOFFITT: For example, the Mosh bag salads. We have a packaged salad company with every package that's going out this month has a pear recipe and information about pears on the pack, so consumers will see that every time they buy this salad. We've sent out a lot of information to the press around the country to promote National Pear month so they'll talk it up in the magazines, and newspapers, and maybe the television shows. And in addition, Pear Bureau Northwest continues its Holiday pear in-store promotion programs and offers a popular promotional keepsake on their website, www.usapears.com & a Christmas ornament of & what else?... a partridge in a pear tree.
