11/02/05 Cherry Research Review

The annual cherry research review is set for November 3rd and 4th at The Dalles, Oregon. MCPHERSON: The purpose of the meeting is to review research projects that are underway that our organizations have funded, and to hear new proposals for research that's suppose to be conducted in the next one, two, or three years. Jim McPherson of the Washington Tree Fruit Research Commission says the event sponsored by his organization and the Oregon Sweet Cherry Commission will include some guests this year. MCPHERSON: I might also point out that the California Cherry Advisor Board will have its manager and three other growers in attendance. So while it is primarily an Oregon / Washington meeting, we are going to have some California growers up. Similar reviews are conducted in areas of the tree fruit industry and technology. And McPherson says the intriguing part of the program, whether it is cherries, apples, pears, or technological advances, is the presentations giving by both those with existing projects funded by the Commissions and those bringing first time proposals to the board for consideration. MCPHERSON: I'd like to think that every project we've got has got something interesting for some producer or handler of sweet cherries in the Pacific Northwest. And we'll be hearing from about twenty-five researchers on the third of November. Then on the following day, on the fourth, we'll hear from another ten researchers with some ideas for new projects. Funding awards for new projects are usually announced at the conclusion of the annual review.
