With today's Fruit Grower Report, I'm Bob Larson. The Washington Apple Education Foundation, or WAEF, along with Wenatchee-based Stemilt Growers have recently awarded a half-dozen local students with college scholarships ...

BRIANNA SHALES ... "So, our company has a few scholarships available to students and this year we were able to support six local students on their college journeys, many of which are Stemilt employees or children of Stemilt employees, so it's very exciting."

Stemilt's Brianna Shales says the qualifications vary ...

BRIANNA SHALES ... "There's different qualification based on the scholarship that they're awarded, but we definitely like to give back to our employees as much as we possibly can. So, some is based on financial hardship, others based on academic excellence and things like that."

And, Shales says, you don't have to be an Ag major ...

BRIANNA SHALES ... "No, in fact, I think some of our winners this year will pursue degrees in marketing and various aspects. As you know, the fruit world involves a lot of different areas now, from I.T. to sales and marketing to production and agriculture. And, it involves a lot of paths so hopefully some of their paths lead them back to us, but if not, that's okay. We just want to help them out."

WAEF represents Washington's tree fruit industry and has awarded nearly 1 million dollars in scholarships to 250 students for the upcoming school year.

Listen tomorrow for more on the scholarships and the students awarded them.
