08/31/05 Crop insurance heads up

November 20th seems like a long ways away. But according to JoLynne Seufer of U.S.D.A.'s Risk Management Agency in Spokane, their agency will soon be getting the word out about various federal crop insurance programs pertaining to the tree fruit, berry, and wine grape industries. SEUFER: Our initiative there is going to be coming out fairly shortly to remind farmers to start working with their crop insurance agents to maybe see if there's a higher coverage, or maybe just a different insurance program altogether would better fit their risk management plan. One of the programs scheduled to get a big push is the recently expanded Adjusted Gross Revenue program, or A.G.R. lite, introduced last year. Seufer says that particular program provides types of coverage for tree fruit, berry, and wine grape crops that previously were not covered. SEUFER: The Federal Crop Insurance Corporation just recently expanded the dollar of liability coverage that we are offering on that insurance policy, which will expand its availability to so many more farmers because of the higher dollar value. Seufer adds there is one deadline coming up within the month, and that applies to nursery producers. SEUFER: The current nursery producers have until September 30th to make any contract changes. But for the 2006 crop year, they have until next May, a brand new producer, to go get nursery coverage.
