07/15/05 Keep them in place

The U.S. Commerce Department has already made its decision. The U.S. Apple Association today is scheduled to submit arguments with the International Trade Commission to keep current anti-dumping tariffs on Chinese apple juice concentrate in place. CRANNEY: The I.T.C. will make a decision on August 5th as to whether they will continue with a full, anti-dumping investigation for the five-year review or whether it will be an expedited review. So the duties will remain in place at least through that period. Jim Cranney of the U.S. Apple Association says the decision will be crucial to the U.S. apple juice industry. Currently, some Chinese apple juice concentrate producers are exempt from tariffs while others pay as much as fifty-two per cent in duties. But take away all duties, and Cranney says it would just about be fatal to our domestic apple juice concentrate industry. CRANNEY: And the end result of that would be that the concentrate importers and apple juice processing companies would be able to get apple juice concentrate at a much cheaper price and therefore have to pay growers a lower price for their juice apples. So where hoping that we can maintain this stability that we see in the market right now at that approximate four dollar level and benefit from the ability that that would allow provide for the juice apple market.
