07/04/05 Strawberry flavored pears?

A new company, Prevar Limited, has brought global fruit industry entities together with a development and marketing plan for new varieties of apples and pears, that according Prevar's Lynnell Brandt. BRANDT: This is a situation where we have now a major breeding program in the world, Hort Research, is coupled with grower industries in New Zealand and in Australia along with an international nursery group that specializes in I.P. management to try to introduce these new selections globally and with a coordinated approach. And where Prevar is going with these potential selections stems from customer research. BRANDT: We also have done studies to find out in fact what the consumer is desirable of the product, whether is juiciness, crispness, sweetness, some tartness, and then through natural breeding, attempting to meet those expectations. That means a more disease resistant apple, or apples with high crunch value, or a pear with flavor tones such as strawberry and mango. BRANDT: We're attempting to get the eating texture, quality of the Asian, with the European favor, but we've actually yielded some very unique flavored materials and we're hoping to progress those to a commercial reality. Brandt says many of these new varieties will soon undergo testing and evaluation with the long range goal of commercial release.
