A new smartphone app connects consumers with locally grown foods and farmers markets.

The What's In Season App, created by the National Food Market Maker program in conjunction with the Farmers Market Association and the Agricultural Marketing Resource Center, allows consumers to see what local products are available in their area at farmers markets throughout the growing season.

Darlene Knipe, with the National Food Market Maker Program, explains how the app works...

"It's actually tied to your growing zones, and what can be very specific about seasonal product and when it's at it's peak freshness. In addition it also offers two other pieces of information, who the grower is and where the nearest farmers market is and when it takes place"

And she says, the app serves a need for consumers and farmers...

"alot of people just dont know what is actually local. I think we have become so accostomend to buying just about anything we want at the local market, so we don't always know when something is grown locally or when it tastes the best. The other benefit is we really want to help promote those local growers. "
