NAFTA Meeting In Georgia

Earlier this week, USDA Secretary Sonny Perdue and his Canadian and Mexican counter parts had their first trilateral meeting in Georgia to discuss the North American Free Trade Agreement or NAFTA. Secretary Purdue said

Perdue: "There are things that need to be modernized. There are family discussions that need to take place regarding how we are doing our job versus how they are doing their job and we will address those at the proper time. It's entirely correct to want to modernize this agreement that is virtually 25 years old. We're going to do it in a congenial way. We're going to do it in a way of commonality of understanding each others' needs and each others' desires as we go forward to represent our own sovereign interests for each nation."

Although he and his counterparts are not the trade negotiators, they intend to have a voice at the table as each year $85 billion in ag trade flowing between these three trading partners.

In a joint statement that was issued, it was stated quote, "Our visit to Georgia fostered the mutual understanding and personal relationships that will help North American agriculture thrive, improve our regional partnership and collaboration, and strengthen our trading relationship." Unquote.
