New Forage Seed Mixture Benefits Pollinators

This is the time of year to examine your pasture and its condition. Grassland Oregon has introduced a new seed mixture called Pastures for Pollinators that will provide valuable pollinator habitat while supporting sustainable livestock farming. Co-founder of Grassland Oregon Risa DeMasi shares more details

DeMasi: "We've put together a great formula of a number of legume and forbes species that are attractive to all kinds of pollinators — whether it is bees or months or butterflies — but they are also nutritionally balanced for ruminant livestock. Their root system vary also so they create great channels in the soil. A number of them will contribute quite a bit of fertility in the soil as well — fixing quite a bit of nitrogen. So you get a win-win-win. We are at the perfect time for people to start thinking about renovating or overseeding their pastures because it is incredibly important. A little bit is going to go a long way. When you purchase Pastures for Pollinators all of the profits are going to go to sustainable ag research. We are not keeping it — we just want to get the product out there so we can continue to do good things in that area."

The monies will go towards funding a position at Oregon State University to do additional sustainable research agriculture focusing forage and pastures.

Pastures for Pollinators seed mixture is available and orders - or donations to help increase and sustain the nation's pollinator population - can be made at www.pasturesforpollinators.com.
