06/06/05 Major Oregon field days this week

Farm and Ranch June 6, 2005 Tomorrow, Tuesday, June 7th is the annual Pendleton Field Day at the Columbia Basin Agricultural Research Center. The station's Steve Petrie says registration begins at 7:45 a.m. with coffee and donuts and the program will begin at 8:30. Petrie: "We've got eight field tours in the morning touching on root lesion nematodes, weed control in chemical fallow, optimum agronomic practices for brown mustard in the northwest here, a potential new crop, and then some alternative harvesting techniques for direct seed systems. Several other talks as well and highlights on biodiesel production, what does it take? There will be hosted lunch at noon and then some talks in the afternoon followed by an ice cream social at 2:30. On Wednesday, June 8th registration for the Sherman Station Field Day begins at 7:45 a.m. at the Sherman County Fairgrounds. Following a welcome and introductions at 8:15 busses will take participants to the Sherman station for tours of experimental plots. That tour ends at 12:15 and is followed by a hosted lunch. Petrie emphasizes the field days are free and open to the public. Petrie: We encourage all growers to come as well as folks that are involved in agriculture such as bank officers and regulatory folks. We are looking for maybe 250 people at Pendleton with 100 to 125 down at the Sherman Station Field Day."
