06/01/05 Weekly crop ratings

Farm and Ranch June 1, 2005 USDA's weekly crop ratings show another decline in the condition of the U.S. winter wheat crop over the past week. Department meteorologist Brad Rippey has the details. Rippey: "And we still some declines in condition as the season comes to an end. 48% of the winter wheat rated good to excellent. A week ago it was 52%. Still holding on a little bit better than last year's crop which was 41% good to excellent at this time in 2004." In the Northwest, Idaho's winter wheat is rated 97 percent good to excellent, Washington's 76 percent and Oregon's 57 percent. USDA's Rippey has details on the percent of the crop headed. Rippey: "Now beginning to head far up into the northern states. For example, South Dakota 20% of the winter wheat now headed. That is up from one percent a week ago. And Idaho eight percent headed. All of that in the last week. Nationally, for the week ending May 29th 81% of the winter wheat headed. National average is exactly that at 81%." Heading of the winter wheat in Oregon and Washington are way ahead of the five-year average for this time at 76% headed in Oregon and 60% in Washington. Ninety-seven percent of the U.S. spring wheat crop was planted to start this week and 88% had emerged. The crop was rated 77 percent good to excellent, up three points from last week. The U.S. corn crop is 85 percent emerged and rated 62 percent good to excellent, which compares to 68 percent at this time last year.
