Organizers say the annual Ag Day at the Capitol is designed to recognize and celebrate the abundance provided by the agricultural community.

But it is also a day to educate lawmakers and the consumers alike about the impact the industry has on Colorado's economy and culture.

"Many individuals don't really understand the full breadth and reach and depth of agriculture and this is a great way of doing that."

That is Terry Frankhauser, Chair of the Colorado Ag Council and Executive Vice President of the Colorado Cattlemen's Association. The Colorado Agriculture Council and the Colorado Chefs Association will host the event on March 20th.

Frankhauser says for a few hours producers and ag professionals get to dine, laugh and share their ideas with a hundred legislators, their staffs, the governor's office, and several state agency leaders.

"Everybody has perception of agriculture. What it is and what it isn't. This opportunity really helps them understand the broad spectrum of not only commodities but the diversity of ag production and producers. The real impact directly but more importantly indirectly. Tourism and recreation benefit hugely from agriculture because we maintain the view sheds."

In addition to the educational nature of the event, ag professionals and state leaders will share a meal, served to everybody in the capitol. The ag businesses also make donations to the Food Bank of the Rockies.

This is the first year for many new lawmakers as well the first for Jerald Polis Governor and Kate Greenberg as Ag Commissioner
