Millet Market Order Update

Following a public hearing in Akron, Commissioner of Agriculture Don Brown has announced there will be a referendum of Colorado millet producers on whether there should be a Millet Marketing Order.

Glenda Mostek Marketing Specialist with the State Agriculture Department says if millet growers do vote to create a market order the resulting funds collected would go toward education, promotion and research of the millet crop in Colorado.

"The level of assessment will be set by the referendum. So the growers will be allowed to say they'd be willing to pay so much and set a ceiling on that."

Mostek says the market order shouldn't be confused with the growers' associations.

"There already is a Millet Association and the check off programs are somewhat limited in what they do. They can not lobby the state of federal government."

Voting will take place in August. For more information, visit: https://www.colorado.gov/pacific/agmarkets/market-orders

Colorado produced over 11 million bushels of millet last year. It's well suited for Colorado as it is very drought tolerant,
