Recent Snow Storms and Weather Forecast

A series of snowy storms continues to hit the Northwestern part of the Plains and much of the Rocky Mountains - with the latest episode on Tuesday. USDA Meteorologist Brad Rippey shares some of the snowfall as of early Tuesday
Rippey:”Seven inches in Billings, Montana, three inches in Colorado Springs, six inches on the ground in Salt Lake City, Utah. This is one area of the country where we have had enough cold air mixing in to generate the snow fall.”
Tuesday’s snowfall in the Denver area measured 7.7 inches which was the biggest one day snowfall so far this season and a new record for December 15th. Ripley says the snow cover is a positive
Rippey: “From the crop standpoint this is great news for the winter wheat cuz it puts us down not only moisture but also blanket of insulation for the crop. So for the most part - other than the day-to-day difficulties of keeping the livestock warm and healthy, and getting around on rural roads — it is a boon for agriculture.”
Rippey shares the weather forecast for next week which looks to be a very wet Christmas with varying temperatures nationwide.
Rippey: “Looking at the period of December 22nd through the 28th — there is a very great likelihood of warm conditions across the Eastern half of the country but we do expect colder than normal conditions in most of the Western states. In terms of precipitation patterns, there is going to be plenty of storminess around. It is rare to see a time period like this where you see above normal preciptiaion virtually from coast to coast but that is what we are expecting from the 22nd through the 28th.”
