VS Update

As of last week's Vesicular Stomatitis update from the Colorado Department of Ag's State Veterinarian's Office, there are 42 locations in 14 counties under quarantine after horses, mules, and cattle herds tested positive for VS.

Colorado State Veterinarian Dr.Keith Roehr says livestock owners need to continue being vigilant about insect control.

Roehr: "Don't grow weary of doing well and keep your livestock control up. Typically by the end of this month, we will should see some cold weather. Last year it wasn't until the middle November before we had a hard freeze but when we get that freeze it finally knocks out those fly population that spread vesicular stomatitis. But until then, insect control can be an extremely important tool in the prevention of the disease."

He encourages livestock owners to continue monitoring the colorado.gov website under the tab of animals and then livestock health.

Roehr: "They should see what counties are still risk and particularly for dairymen and if it has been diagnosis in the county in which they reside, then certainly insect control is extremely important."
