Reminder that Drones Share Airspace

The FAA has regulations surrounding the flying of personal recreational drones or Unmanned Aerial Vehicles — requirements limiting drones to flying in the 0 to 400 feet airspace, fly no closer than five miles from towered airport, to keep the UAV in eyesight at all times and to yield to manned aircraft.
Colorado Agricultural Aviation Association Executive Director Jessica Freeman says it is important for users to remember there are 15-plus industries that are also using that 0 to 400 feet airspace.
Freeman: “They need to be aware that it is shared airspace. So if they know of a low-altitude operation that is in close proximity to where they’d like to fly. Just call and talk to that operation. Make sure that you are not going to be flying in the same air space at the same time. Right now there are no electronic communication solutions — it really comes down to simple phone calls, talk to the people around you. The Colorado Agricultural Aviation Association has a map of all the local operations and phone numbers for contact at www.coagav.org. So for a drone operator, I would document that I went above and beyond the bare minimum that was required by the FAA.”
