Learning The Importance of Agriculture

Learning The Importance of Agriculture. I'm Greg Martin with Colorado Ag Today.

The Colorado Agriculture Leadership Foundation or CALF, has been on a mission to teach kids about the importance of life on the farm and according to the President and CEO of CALF Brooke Fox they've been doing that since 2002.

FOX: Our mission is connecting people to agriculture through education, community projects and special events. One of the biggest things we do is provide educational programs for - primarily at this point - elementary school. This year it will probably be about 3000 kids will come to the ranch and experience different activities related to agriculture.

Fox says they work with their local FFA chapter to help bring supervised agricultural experiences.

FOX: Real life experiences whether it's managing livestock or working with natural resource land management, that kind of thing. The opportunities are really endless but everything we do we try make sure that it has an awesome connection to agriculture. Like we raise livestock and when the kids come through the education program we always remind them this is not a petting zoo. These are livestock that have a purpose and agriculture is an important part of our everyday life.

An upcoming event called "Farm & Ranch Day" is on May 30 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

FOX: It's not just kids it's also families and 4-H and FFA people so we'll have between 500 and 1000 people that come to that event. CALF runs many different programs and "Farm & Ranch Day" is one of the events that we put on.

And that's Colorado Ag Today. I'm Greg Martin, thanks for listening on the Ag Information Network of the West.
