Equine Reproduction Lab

Equine Reproduction Lab. I’m Greg Martin with Colorado Ag Today.

Sometimes it’s important to help nature out and Dr. Jerry Black, Director, Equine Reproduction Lab at Colorado State says that’s what the program is about.

BLACK: We’re proud to say we’ve been in the business of establishing good horse programs since the veterinary school started in the 1800’s.

He says there’s about 400 students in the under-grad program and it’s a degree specific in Equine Science. He talks about the Equine Reproduction Lab.

BLACK: It’s a state of the art research and clinical facility, it’s actually the largest in the country and it’s been the pioneer of many, many techniques that are used commonly in the industry now. Our newest division that’s been in existence for almost 10 years now is our Advanced Reproductive Technique department. This is a very, very hi-tech facility that’s not only offering clinical service to our clients many of which come from many states away but also a state of the art facility offering research for the advancement of reproduction in horses.

Black says that so much of the industry is different than it was 50 years ago.

BLACK: Your high-end performance horses are horses that are way too valuable to put out with a group of mares because of risk of injury or something like that. Many of them are still performing so we have frozen semen available for them so that they can go on with their careers. Same for the mares. We’ve had many mares that come in that are still great performance horse mares.

And that’s Colorado Ag Today. I’m Greg Martin, thanks for listening on the Ag Information Network of the West.
