Western Dairy Mission

Western Dairy Mission

Western Dairy Mission. I’m Greg Martin with Colorado Ag Today.

The Western Dairy Association has been around for a long tim in one form or another but with the formation of the Dairy Checkoff in the 80’s, Cindy Haren, President and CEO for the Western Dairy Association the mission became one of education and outreach.

HAREN: We work on behalf of dairy farm families. We’re one of the 17 state and region checkoff associations. We’re also affiliated with Dairy Management Inc. out of Chicago and the National Dairy Council so we work all together federation wide in the whole United States to create programs that help educate and inform consumers, schools, various audiences about the nutritional value of dairy foods.

Haren was at last weeks Ag Summit.

HAREN: They wanted us to talk about the dairy community in general and why it’s so innovative. We do a lot of work through the Innovation Center for U.S. Dairy about innovating dairy foods, innovating in the whole sustainability arena, health and wellness, research and development so there’s a lot of historical years of innovation in dairy.

She says that while their original mandate hasn’t changed, the scope of work has.

HAREN: You fast forward to now, I think we’re doing more innovation in the program we’re doing today than ever before because we’re doing with partnerships and they are partnerships that are of very diverse backgrounds but we all share a common value.

And that’s Colorado Ag Today. I’m Greg Martin, thanks for listening on the Ag Information Network of the West.
