CSU's New Research Center

CSU's New Research Center. I'm Greg Martin with Colorado Ag Today.

Steve Newman is the Professor of Floriculture, Horticulture and Landscape at CSU. His department is getting an early Christmas present from the college.

NEWMAN: It's an investment that CSU is making into the horticulture program at CSU and an investment they're making into the college of ag to the tune of about $7.4 million dollars. The total facility is going to be just over 21,000 sq. ft. 6,200 feet of that is going to be classrooms and offices and labs and the rest is going to be a brand new greenhouse complex.

The research done in Newman's department helps ag producers across the state.

NEWMAN: Our program is very multi-disciplinary. Of course we always grow the plants for the annual trial grounds we have on campus. Everything from working with the green industry which grows the blooming plants and bedding plants and landscape plants to controlled environment ag with vegetables and horticulturalist related research. We have a large potato industry. It depends on what the researcher is doing at the time.

Newman says the facility will be state of the art and that they are pouring the new foundations this week.

NEWMAN: The plans are for us to have this greenhouse turnkey ready July 1. It's an aggressive date. Well actually June 30 because July 1 they throw up the fence around our existing facility and start the demo to start the land prep for the new football stadium.

Plans are now to have an open house in the first week of August and you will want to be sure and attend to see the new facility at CSU.

And that's Colorado Ag Today. I'm Greg Martin, thanks for listening on the Ag Information Network of the West.
