Recipe For Startups

Recipe For Startups

Recipe For Startups. I'm Greg Martin with Colorado Ag Today.

A number of farmers markets and ag producers often have their own line of food products taken from the products they grow. Wendy Lee White, Marketing Specialist with the Colorado Department of Ag says a new workshop, Fundamentals for Food Product Success can help get new businesses started.

WHITE: This is a new focus and to specifically help the startup businesses so somebody who's just interested in beginning a food processing business and what they need to do to get started. And so we're really excited to offer a great agenda on April 28th in Aurora at the Community College of Aurora to help those folks get started in their business.

White says they will get into the nuts and bolts of starting a business.

WHITE: There's a lot of research involved so a lot of it is pertaining to rules and regulations about manufacturing about selling food products specifically within Colorado. They need to understand not only their product but where they plan on selling it, who their target market it and so if they don't have some of those topics covered we certainly hope this workshop will help guide them in their efforts as well.

Current business owners may find some of the information useful and White says they do expect a lot of ag producers with a lot of ideas for products.

WHITE: There's a wide range. Salsa and barbecue sauces, jams, jellies, pickled products, snack foods, chocolate, coffee roasting so you name it, we've probably had calls over the years from people who are looking to dip their toes into the food processing industry.

And that's Colorado Ag Today. I'm Greg Martin, thanks for listening on the Ag Information Network of the West.
