A low pressure system will produce numerous light showers across the Columbia Basin today. Rainfall amounts will range from a tenth of an inch or less in the Yakima, Ellensburg, and Moses Lake areas to a quarter to half inch to the south especially in the Pendleton and Walla Walla areas. Now adding this to the ¼ to ¾ inch received over the past week and topsoils have piced up some good moisture to help dryland pastures, wheat, peas and canola. A drier period will return for Wednesday and Thursday, but another disturbance will bring scattered showers back into the area this weekend with additional rainfall mainly a quarter inch or less. . Crop water use for the past 7 days was between ¾ inch and 1 inch and will likely continue at that pace. If you need to spray chemicals, Wednesday and Thursday may be the best with the light winds and least chance for washoff from rain. Good hay curing will resume Wednesday with humidity getting down to between 25 and 35 percent each afternoon. Hay cut this week may have only light rain damage while curing. Looking at growing degree days base 40 since February 1, south of Toppenish to Dayton we're running a week behind last year, but close to the normal. To the north, heat units are accumulating close to last year's pace and 10 days to 2 weeks ahead of the 30 year normal.
