Ag Weather Impacts

After a very cold, but quiet weather period to start March, it's back to another round of precipitation across the Columbia Basin. A vigorous and moist low pressure area off the northern California Coast today will move northeast across Oregon on Wednesday. Look for snow to begin across northern Oregon late this afternoon and increase and move into the Washington part of the Columbia Basin this evening and overnight and continue on Wednesday. Since this low is originating off the California coast, as it moves northeast it will bring some warmer air that will allow some areas to receive rain or freezing rain on Wednesday. This may also limit the snow amounts to around 2 or 3 inches on most farms. So minor delays can be expected in farm to market transport. Although the winds will be mainly under 10 mph, the rain and snow will cause moderate to severe livestock cold stress. Lighter rain and snow showers will continue into Thursday, but a drier trend will prevail for Friday through the weekend. Today will likely be the last day where the temperatures remain below freezing. Beginning Wednesday and continuing through the weekend, daytime highs should rise into the mid 30s to mid 40s. Although this is 10 to 15 degrees warmer than what we've seen these past several days, it's still 8 to 12 degrees below normal for early March. The snow melt will be slowed however, since overnight lows will drop into the 20s and this should prevent flooding.
